INTRODUCTION

Athletics as a sport has several events. These events fall either under the track events or field events. Some of the world known famous track and field events taking place in the athletics sport are Running, Hurdles, Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw, Weight Lifting, Gymnastics etc. Running and Hurdles fall under the Track events. Usually it is conducted as 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 1500 meters categories. However hurdles are not conducted as a 1500 meter category.

Relay Running is another track event which is very famous. In this event teams comprising of four members participates. Even Relay hurdles follow the same objective. The team that finishes first is awarded the gold medal. All these events are very famous in the Olympics and the entire world takes a lot of pride in Olympics.

A hurdle is an event where the participant needs to leap over evenly spaced hurdles throughout the run. As beginners people compete in 110 meters hurdle race, for women the distance is about 100 meters. The first three members to finish the race are awarded prizes. First finisher receives a gold medal, second receives a silver and the third receives bronze.

In the recently held Winter Olympics 2010, about 82 nations participated and about 2,622 athletes took part. Such is the pompous importance Olympics as an event gathers. And every nation aims to top the tables or at least bag as many gold’s as possible. They take a lot of pride in the event.

TIPS FOR BEGINEERS

For beginners, hurdles are not an easy task. But is very simple to learn it and practice it. I’ll give you three basic tips to be followed to master the art of running in a hurdle race.

  • Learn to be persistent: Life in general as many obstacles. You might come across several difficult circumstances and problems. Ironically training for the hurdle race contains several other obstacles apart from the hurdles as an obstacle. Know your ambition well. Define your goal and stick with it no matter what kinds of obstacles you might come across. Develop resistance and patience to face such obstacles. A cricketer I knew had diabetes, he went on to become the sultan of swing bowling, he was so good in his art, people literally feared to face his bowling. His name is Wasim Akram and he dominated the world of bowling in cricket for over a decade.

  • Breathe Consistently:Breathing is the source of our lives. Breathing properly enhances our fitness to unimaginable levels. People follow yoga to develop great stamina and power. Athletics involves good fitness and it is crucial to have a decent stamina. As a beginner focus a lot on breathing exercises and follow them as you train. You can breathe slowly as well as rapidly but breathing at a consistent pace which keeps you comfortable and allows you to focus on your training is crucial to master any athletic event let alone hurdles.

  • Obtain Resources: Equipment alone doesn’t win you races. However efficient use of these resources is necessary to win races. Motivation, determination and hard work allows you to travel the distance, but smartness allows you to work in a wiser way and achieve the impossible.
