World 800m record holder plans another record in Croatia

World 800m record holder David Rudisha of Kenya will spearhead Africa’s campaign at the Continental Cup in Split, Croatia this weekend.

Only the best from the respective continental championships have been invited in Croatia for the track and field event that will be held on Sept. 4-5.

Rudisha trimmed 0.02 of a second from Wilson’s Kipketer’s world 800m record with a stunning 1:41.09 run in Berlin on August 22 before running an astonishing 1:41.01 in Rieti last Sunday; he will be expected to claim maximum points for Africa in Split.

Rudisha’s main opposition will be European champion Marcin Lewandowski (1:44.30) of Poland and Michael Rimmer of Britain (1:43.89. US champion Nick Symmonds of the Americas (1:43.76) could also be a threat.

Africa’s boast a powerful three-man team in the 1,500m led by Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop of Kenya, who will be confident of adding another title to his already impressive list.

African Championships silver medallist Amine Laalou of Morocco (3:29.53) is the second fastest on the 2010 World Lists and is another danger as is Ethiopia’ s consistent Mekonnen Gebremedhin (3:31.57).

The main challenge to African dominance could come from 20-year-old Australia prodigy Ryan Gregson, who set a national record 3:31.06 in Monaco.

Commonwealth Games an exposure to Olympics

Commonwealth Games an exposure to Olympics

SOUTH Africa’s chances of winning more medals at the 2012 London Olympics are slim after a small team was named for the Commonwealth Games in October.

This is according to athletics great Sam Mlangeni, speaking after the SA Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam named the team yesterday.

Sascoc are sending a team of 11 track and field athletes, with no room for the marathoners, including top runners like Hendrick Ramaala. Mlangeni said he could not believe that potential medallists like Rene Kalmer, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula are not in the team.

“I still can’t believe we are sending such a small team to the Commonwealth Games, I thought we were going to send just over 20,” Mlangeni said. “Most of the countries are using the Commonwealth Games to expose their athletes to int

ernational competition and prepare them for the Olympics.”

Sascoc president Gideon

Sam said they were confident that the athletes and swimmers would continue taking the lead in terms of winning medals.

Chris in the England squad for Commonwealth Games in Delhi

EUROPEAN silver medallist Chris Thompson and the best distance runner has been named in the England athletics squad for October’s 2010  Commonwealth Games in Dehli.

The 29-year-old Barrow-born distance runner will compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in India after thrusting himself back onto the international scene.

Thompson, a lifelong Barrow AFC fan, finished second behind compatriot Mo Farah in the 10,000m at the European Championships in Barcelona last month.

His medal came after years of injury problems had left him unable to fulfil his potential following victory in the European under-23s 5,000m in 2003.

Thompson and Farah have both been named for the same two events they ran in Spain, with Andrew Vernon the third member of the England team in the 10,000m. The 100-strong England athletics team for the games will also include two other European champions – 110m hurdler Andy Turner and Phillips Idowu, who will be defending his triple jump crown.

Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, who missed the European Championships earlier this summer with a quad injury, was also included in the team for the games, which take place between October 3 and 14.

AUGUSTA – Auburn Running Club placed second in the team competition at the recent Maine Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship.

Poland won the championship with 458 points, followed bt Auburn with 255, York (249), Brunswick (203) and Windham (193).

Auburn had more than 50 athletes qualifying for the championship, and it the team’s depth that paid off in the team competition. Coached by Tom Menendez, a nationally recognized racewalk coach, the team scored many of its points in that event, including two state champions: Spencer Dunn in the 11-12 boys, and Morgan Knowlton in the 11-12 girls.

Other Auburn state champions were Ben Davis in the 13-14 boys’ 100 and 400 meters, Brooks Layman in the 13-14 discus, Leyla Davis in the 8-and-under long jump and Olivia Jalbert-Hodgdon in the 8-and-under javelin.

Athletes in the 8-and-under age group were very successful. Placing in the top three of their events were Olivia Jalbert-Hodgdon (javelin, high jump, shot put), Leyla Davis (LJ, 100), Emma Hefty (racewalk) Micah Jack (Shot Put, 200m) Gabriel Hastings (racewalk), and Jacob Arel (javelin).

In the 9-10 age group, top-three finishers included Mathew Syphers (racewalk) and Lauren Jutras (racewalk).

In the 11-12 age group, Spencer Dunn (racewalk), Zack Guimond (400), Sam Michaud (racewalk), Kylie Bureau (javelin), Izzy Layman (shot put) and Morgan Knowlton (racewalk) were leaders.

Ben Bailey (100, 400, triple jump, discus), Mitchell Bourisk (racewalk), Brooks Layman (discus, shot put), Kerri St. Denis (high jump, shot put) and Kailey Norcross (racewalk) earned top-three points in the 13-14 bracket.

Tyson Gay’s night fight

“It may sound weird but I’ve received more attention since that victory than when I won the world title in ‘07,” said Gay.

Tyson Gay says beating Usain Bolt has brought him more fame than when he conquered the world of track and field.

He also believes his achievement in stripping the Jamaican superstar’s aura of invincibility is good for the sport of athletics.

American Gay runs for the first time since upsetting Bolt in Stockholm last week (right) when he competes in the 100 metres at tonight’s Aviva London Grand Prix.

But it is the American who is the star attraction after ending Olympic and world champion Bolt’s two-year unbeaten reign over 100m in a time of 9.84 seconds.

It may sound weird but I’ve received more attention since that victory than when I won the world title in ‘07,” said Gay.

Expect Gay to be in a class of his own, though, because he says a weight has been lifted from his shoulders by “doing something I said I could do” in beating Bolt.

He also knows that Lightning will strike again as “Usain is a fighter and he is a championship performer”.

When he says he will be ready for next year, I really believe him,” added Gay.

7.04pm: Men’s 400m Hurdles - Dai Greene, another golden hero of Barcelona, takes on Welsh rival Rhys Williams and ex-world champions Bershawn Jackson and Felix Sanchez.

7.38pm: Men’s Triple Jump – PhilliPs iDowu, Britain’s World, Commonwealth and European champion, clashes with arch-rival Teddy Tamgho and ex-Olympic champion Christian Olsson.

Mr Usain Bolt vs Mr Tyson Gay

Mr Gay's response on beating Mr Bolt is instructive. "I'm really happy with the win, even though Usain Bolt isn't in the best of shape... it was important to beat someone important like that for the fans and for the sport," he said.

We find Mr Usain Bolt’s loss to the USA’s Mr Tyson Gay at the IAAF Diamond League DN Galan meet on Friday distressing, not because we think his physical prowess and brilliance as a runner are diminishing, but because we don’t think he took the race seriously enough.

According to the Associated Press report reproduced in Saturday’s edition, Mr Bolt said he was not in the best of shape and that this was an “easy” season for him. According to Mr Bolt, he’ll be in unbeatable top form next year when the World Championships get underway in Daegu, South Korea.

Now, that may be all well and good for him. We wonder, though, how such a comment   had it been made prior to the race  may have impacted on his fans’ decision to spend money to see what was promoted as one of the most anticipated events of this track season. Would every last one of them have paid top dollar to come and see Mr Bolt take it easy? How would the organisers and sponsors have reacted?

We wonder, though, how such a comment   had it been made prior to the race  may have impacted on his fans’ decision to spend money to see what was promoted as one of the most anticipated events of this track season. Would every last one of them have paid top dollar to come and see Mr Bolt take it easy? How would the organisers and sponsors have reacted?

Let’s face it, it is the fan base which determines who is who in the sporting and entertainment fraternities. There is no such thing as a star without fans. If track and field was not a darling in the hearts of millions worldwide, then even if Mr Bolt and all the other stars whom we so admire could run faster than lightning, they would not enjoy a fraction of the fame and fortune they do now.

This is something that Mr Bolt’s managers would do well to impress upon him, especially if it is the case that he is getting bored. It might be in their best interests to point out that one of the realities of being a superstar is that a huge responsibility is owed to the fans who facilitate said status.

Mr Gay’s response on beating Mr Bolt is instructive.

young movements in place for River Cities track team

River Cities has a large contingent at the 2010 USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., which began Tuesday. River Cities has 12 athletes competing in various events.

However, this year’s team will have at least one representative in every age group.

“We have kids in every age group, and that’s a first for us,” Plaza said. “We are very proud of them.”

Youth is the team’s strong suit, and leading that group is 10-year-old Christian Daniels. He will compete in the 9-10-year-old age group in the 100 and 200 meters along with the long jump.

At the regional championships in Monroe earlier this month, Daniels edged Myles Mason by .04 seconds to finish in first in the 100-meter dash. Daniels cruised to victory in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.15 seconds.

The team still has a crop of young talent that will be looking to break through, but Plaza is confident in his team.

“This is the youngest group we’ve ever had,” Plaza said. “Youth is the key with this group. The goal is to peak at nationals.”

Not to be outdone in the youth movement are two competitors in the 15-16-year-old intermediate age group — Hanaj Carter and Josh Lamers. The 15-year-old Carter will compete in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Lamers will run in the 110-meter hurdles.

Lamers won the 110-meter hurdles, while Carter took home two second-place finishes at regionals.

Overall, Plaza said the group is good and hopes the team peaks during the up and coming, while some will adjust to flying.
