Shotput is the common term used which refer to both the shot and the throwing movement.

A person should have the basic knowledge about shot put while choosing it. They are available in many varieties and come in various shapes, sizes and materials based upon the thrower.

You have to consider several factors before you are going to buy it. Let us have a look on some of the important factors:

Size

This is one of the main aspects that should be considered when choosing a device. You have to see the size and weight of shot put according to your age and sex. Young girls at junior level will throw a shot in lesser distance than females at high school level and above. On the other hand, males are a bit dense and their shot will differ based on their age group.

Material

This is another feature that needs to be considered while making your purchase. They are available in various different materials based on the player’s preference and throwing capability. Participant can choose either iron or brass made shot otherwise can go for steel.  If you are going to play an outdoor game then better to choose a device without a padded cover, and for indoor event it’s good to buy padded steel shot put.

The CI team won the 4x100m relay and came third in the 4x400m relay

Coach Andrew Winnie said: “They did what they had to. They pulled out all the stops.”

“We had a fair idea we’d get promoted but to actually win the last match is a nice feeling for next year.”

He added: “We’ve got to get better every year and the young athletes coming through are starting to say, well I got a personal best today, but I didn’t win so I’ve got to get a little bit better.”

Events were divided into an A and a B pool.

Dale Garland took the 400m hurdles A title, while Peter Irving took the B. Glenn Etherington and Leo Rice did the same in the 110m hurdles.

David Martin’s jump of 6.82m secured the long jump A title while Ross Jeffs took the B group with 6.58m.

Zane Duquemin took the A finals of the discus and shot put, with James Brehaut winning the A javelin event.

Nathan Stevens won the 400m B and Steve Dawes won the 3,000m Steeplechase B.

The Channel Islands team’s last victory of the day came in the 4×100m relay as Glenn Etherington, Tom Druce, Nathan Stevens and David Martin finished in 42.35 seconds.

The 25 strong Sportingbet Channel Islands Athletic Team is made up of a combination of both Guernsey and Jersey athletes. They’re currently standing in second place behind Glasgow City AC. The top two teams after Saturday’s match will move up into the next division for the start of the new season.

Andrew Winnie said, “This is the biggest team we’ve fielded this season and being on home ground has got to be to our advantage. Being able to host this final match is a wonderful accolade for the Channel Islands and I am confident that the men, with the help of their supporters, will be able to maintain their promotion position in the league. It would of course be nice to finish with a victory over our very strong rivals City of Glasgow, we will see.”

Guernsey athletes competing this weekend are Steve Dawes, Lee Garland, Glenn Etherington, Dale Garland, Tom Druce, Matt Loveridge, Lee Merrien, James Brehaut, Leo Rice, Nathan Stevens, Hywel Robinson, Ben Fiore, James Menhenitt and Ross Hanley.

Jersey’s athletes are Zane Duquemin, David Martin, Ross Jeffs, Jason Fox, Tom Brown, Toby Edwards, Elliott Dorey, Peter Irving, Sam Dawkins, Calum Forrest and Donnie Rockett.

The match takes place at Footes Lane on Saturday 21st August starting at 11.30am with the Hammer, Long Jump and Pole Vault before the track events  and also with Shot Put, Discus and Hurdles begin at 12.30pm concluding with the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays at 3.30pm.

The team is hoping that as many islanders as possible will come along to support them in their bid for promotion into the third division and for the chance to see top class athletes competing in Guernsey.
