Local track: Five Racine County athletes move ahead to Hersey’s national meet

Representing the City of Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, the five qualified by placing first in their respective events at the Hershey state meet June 26 at West Allis after advancing from local and district competition.

This program is sponsored by The Hershey Company and features more than 400 of the best young track and field athletes in North America.

The North American Final will be held at the Henry

Hershey Field on the campus of the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pa. Aug. 7.

This is the 33rd year Hershey’s Track & Field Games has provided 9-14 year-old boys and girls the opportunity to learn and develop the skills required to participate in basic track and field events.

In the girls 9-10 age group, Racine’s Daisy Harper

(50-meter dash), Tiana Marshall (100) and Anna Butler (200) qualified for the national meet.

Harper, 10, ran the 50 meter dash in 7.63 seconds at district meet June 19; the 50 meter dash in 7.56 seconds at state meet June 26; and plays soccer, basketball and track and field.

In the boys 11-12 age group, Caleb Martinez (softball throw) qualified.

And in the girls 13-14 age group, Megan Kuroski (100) qualified.

District and state results were not available for all Racine County qualifiers.

Prevention is better than cure, so athletes should follow some preventive measures to avoid injuries in track and field games. The following prevention should be followed in track and field games.

Wear proper shoes and use starting blocks to avoid any slips.

Use fitness products to enhance the strength of your legs.

While handling shot puts, use shot put balls of proper weight.

Increase your strength by using proper weight sets for training.

Do not let your body to dehydrate, hydrate your body often.

Have regular warm up and stretches.

Running participants should have two days of rest.
