Croydon’s Okoye enters into the World Junior final

Croydon Harrier Lawrence Okoye has qualified for the discus final at the World Junior Athletics Championships.

The 18 year-old threw 59.56m in discus this afternoon’s qualifying session to finish third and claim one of three automatic qualifying spots in his qualifying group.

Okoye’s longest throw came on his final attempt having been in sixth place following 57.24m in the first round and a no-throw in the second.

Overall, he qualified in fifth place for the final which begins at 7.30pm tomorrow night.

Local stars ready to take on U.S track and field national championships

A group of local track and field athletes will be competing in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship starting from today at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The event is going to run through Sunday.

The local field comprises of athletes namely, Chelsea Johnson, Maggie Vessey, Sharon Day, Stephanie Brown Trafton, Ben Bruce and Jordan Hasay.

Johnson, who won the second place in previous year’s world championships in the women’s pole vault will be competing on Sunday. Brown Trafton who won the gold medal in women’s discus in 2008 Olympics will also be competing on Sunday, while Day will be competing in the hepthlanon on Saturday and Sunday. She has chosen not to compete in women’s high jump.

Brown Trafton is said to be a champion in Women’s discus. Last year she won her first U.S National Title.

Vessey like Johnson will aim to get her first National title in women’s 800.

Shot put -Sheriff’s captain wins gold

The last time that Huron County Sheriff’s captain Ted Patrick participated in the Ohio police and fire games was twelve years back. The forty eight year old deputy won the gold medal during the June 16th event in Toledo. He won the first place for the shot put event in the age division called Golden Masters, comprising of fire fighters and police officers between the age group of 45 to 49. Patrick threw the shot put at a distance of 42 feet, 4 inches. Sheriff Dane Howard is very happy with his spokesman’s achievement.

Patrick had participated in a lot of state games for nearly seven or eight years starting in the late eighties. At that point of time, he also indulged in other games like discus, hammer throw, javelin and shot put and managed to win several medals.

In sports, boxing is a very interesting and exciting game. On Thursday night, at the 25th yearly Shaw event in Toronto (Ontario), happiness was not there in Irish eyes for Halifax fighter Tyson Cave because the earlier unbeatable fighter went behind to overcome.
