Shot Put: how to choose a good device

Shotput is the common term used which refer to both the shot and the throwing movement.

A person should have the basic knowledge about shot put while choosing it. They are available in many varieties and come in various shapes, sizes and materials based upon the thrower.

You have to consider several factors before you are going to buy it. Let us have a look on some of the important factors:

Size

This is one of the main aspects that should be considered when choosing a device. You have to see the size and weight of shot put according to your age and sex. Young girls at junior level will throw a shot in lesser distance than females at high school level and above. On the other hand, males are a bit dense and their shot will differ based on their age group.

Material

This is another feature that needs to be considered while making your purchase. They are available in various different materials based on the player’s preference and throwing capability. Participant can choose either iron or brass made shot otherwise can go for steel.  If you are going to play an outdoor game then better to choose a device without a padded cover, and for indoor event it’s good to buy padded steel shot put.

With summer approaching, the Essendon Little Athletics Centre is preparing for the start of the new track and field season.

The club, which runs athletics programs for children of all ages, will hold a registration day for new members on Saturday at the Moonee Valley Athletics Track.

Essendon spokesman David Asquith said the club often experienced higher membership numbers in years when Commonwealth or Olympic games are held, and hoped to see a similar pattern in membership numbers this year.

He said the club catered for children and youth members from under-6 to under-16, with the season to kick off on October 2.

Essendon will also run the On Track program for the under-6 age group, which uses modified athletic equipments and basic skills are taught to prepare children for regular competition.

Chris in the England squad for Commonwealth Games in Delhi

EUROPEAN silver medallist Chris Thompson and the best distance runner has been named in the England athletics squad for October’s 2010  Commonwealth Games in Dehli.

The 29-year-old Barrow-born distance runner will compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in India after thrusting himself back onto the international scene.

Thompson, a lifelong Barrow AFC fan, finished second behind compatriot Mo Farah in the 10,000m at the European Championships in Barcelona last month.

His medal came after years of injury problems had left him unable to fulfil his potential following victory in the European under-23s 5,000m in 2003.

Thompson and Farah have both been named for the same two events they ran in Spain, with Andrew Vernon the third member of the England team in the 10,000m. The 100-strong England athletics team for the games will also include two other European champions – 110m hurdler Andy Turner and Phillips Idowu, who will be defending his triple jump crown.

Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, who missed the European Championships earlier this summer with a quad injury, was also included in the team for the games, which take place between October 3 and 14.

Top class athletes competing in Guernsey

The final match of the men’s British Athletics League is being held at Footes Lane on Saturday. It’s the first time Guernsey and the Channel Islands have ever hosted the event. So CIAC Andrew Winnie is pulling out all the stops to try to gain as many points as possible to guarantee the teams’ promotion into the third division of the British League next season.

The 25 strong Sportingbet Channel Islands Athletic Team is made up of a combination of both Guernsey and Jersey athletes. They’re currently standing in second place behind Glasgow City AC. The top two teams after Saturday’s match will move up into the next division for the start of the new season.

Andrew Winnie said, “This is the biggest team we’ve fielded this season and being on home ground has got to be to our advantage. Being able to host this final match is a wonderful accolade for the Channel Islands and I am confident that the men, with the help of their supporters, will be able to maintain their promotion position in the league. It would of course be nice to finish with a victory over our very strong rivals City of Glasgow, we will see.”

Guernsey athletes competing this weekend are Steve Dawes, Lee Garland, Glenn Etherington, Dale Garland, Tom Druce, Matt Loveridge, Lee Merrien, James Brehaut, Leo Rice, Nathan Stevens, Hywel Robinson, Ben Fiore, James Menhenitt and Ross Hanley.

Jersey’s athletes are Zane Duquemin, David Martin, Ross Jeffs, Jason Fox, Tom Brown, Toby Edwards, Elliott Dorey, Peter Irving, Sam Dawkins, Calum Forrest and Donnie Rockett.

The match takes place at Footes Lane on Saturday 21st August starting at 11.30am with the Hammer, Long Jump and Pole Vault before the track events  and also with Shot Put, Discus and Hurdles begin at 12.30pm concluding with the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays at 3.30pm.

Tyson Gay’s night fight

“It may sound weird but I’ve received more attention since that victory than when I won the world title in ‘07,” said Gay.

Tyson Gay says beating Usain Bolt has brought him more fame than when he conquered the world of track and field.

He also believes his achievement in stripping the Jamaican superstar’s aura of invincibility is good for the sport of athletics.

American Gay runs for the first time since upsetting Bolt in Stockholm last week (right) when he competes in the 100 metres at tonight’s Aviva London Grand Prix.

But it is the American who is the star attraction after ending Olympic and world champion Bolt’s two-year unbeaten reign over 100m in a time of 9.84 seconds.

It may sound weird but I’ve received more attention since that victory than when I won the world title in ‘07,” said Gay.

Expect Gay to be in a class of his own, though, because he says a weight has been lifted from his shoulders by “doing something I said I could do” in beating Bolt.

He also knows that Lightning will strike again as “Usain is a fighter and he is a championship performer”.

When he says he will be ready for next year, I really believe him,” added Gay.

Victoria’s Cummins earns Commonwealth ticket

VICTORIA — Uncarded by the Canadian sporting system, Diane Cummins of Victoria has rebounded to make the Canadian track and field team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi in October.

VICTORIA — Uncarded by the Canadian sporting system, Diane Cummins of Victoria has rebounded to make the Canadian track and field team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi in October.

Thought to be a fading force in Canadian track, the 36-year-old national record holder proved everyone wrong in being named to the 40-athlete team that was announced Wednesday.

Cummins will race the 800 metres and 4×400 relay, earning the qualifying standard in the 800 metres last month at the hometown Victoria International Track Classic at Centennial Stadium, and then assuring her place in Delhi by winning the event at the Canadian championships held last weekend in Toronto.

Cut off from Canadian funding, Cummins has received running support recently from a club in Montana.

There were two notable names missing from the Canadian team roster: world-class hurdlers Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.

Falcon and Nelson on track and field

Tall City Christian Track Club's Miah Nelson, 12, left, and West Texas Track Club's Michelle Falcon, 11, right, are headed to the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics

Miah Nelson is a maturing track-and-field star, a lifer who competed on the national stage before she broke double-digits in the birthday department.

Michelle Falcon took her exposure to the track and field a little more than a year ago. A friend on the soccer team brought her to the sport.

Both athletes are about to take their talents to the national stage. Nelson and Falcon have qualified to compete at the 44th USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., from July 27-Aug. 1.

Nelson had other plans.

Nelson — who won the mile as a Bonham Junior High seventh-grader last year — has suddenly developed a set of springs most distance runners simply don’t have. Three years ago, Nelson’s 800-meter legs carried her to a 16th-place finish in her first national appearance.

Falcon, 11, qualified in the high jump.

But her ability to rise to the occasion came out of nowhere. At this time last year, Falcon and a soccer teammate decided to try out track.

Turns out that Falcon, a seventh-grader at Ector, has found her sport.

“We only started last summer,” said Rudy, her father. “I never expected her to get to this level.”

Falcon had run track during her days in elementary school.

Competing during the summer, though, was a completely different world. For the first time, Falcon gave high jump a try, and she came through at the Region 12 meet to tie for second place and a qualifying spot.
