Athletes won twin golds at Malaysia Open

Regional sprint queen Vu Thi Huong, who won the first semi-final, went on to take the title of the women’s 100m event in a time of 11.55sec. Her teammate Le Ngoc Phuong, who won the second semi-final, pocketed the silver in 11.79 sec.

They both later participated in the women’s 4x100m relay, which Vietnam easily won in a time of 45.06sec.

Coach Nguyen Dinh Minh said he was pleased with the team’s achievements, even though they had performed better at other tournaments.

He added that he was not disappointed that Huong did not get closer to her best time of 11.34, which she achieved when winning the SEA Games title. He said there were still three weeks to go to the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD), and he believes Huong will be at her peak.

At the biggest sports event in the region, Vietnamese athletes will compete in the women’s 200m, 800m, 1,500m, 400m hurdle and 4x400m relay, while the men will take part in the 800m, 1,500m, long jump, triple jump and decathlon.

The track and field events start on November 21, with the finals taking place six days later at the Aoti Stadium in Guangzhou.

Pearson shelf sprints for now

Sally Pearson will delay a confident tilt at the Australian 100 metres record to solely focus on the 100m hurdles for world championships and Olympic glory in the next two years.

Pearson says she will take a hard-nosed approach to the next phase of her career following the ups and downs of a memorable Delhi Commonwealth Games campaign.

The Gold Coast hurdler believes she is poised to break Melinda Gainsford-Taylor’s long-standing national 100m flat record, but does not want to jeopardise her best chances of winning a world title or Olympic gold medal in her pet event.

“I’m going to probably leave the 100 and 200 out of my program for the world championships next year (in Korea) and for the London Olympics simply because it’s going to be a tough two years coming up,” Pearson said.

Boston Marathon 2011 registration open

The Boston Marathon due to begin in 2011 is one of the most anticipated spots events in Boston. This is going to be the 115th Marathon and registration for this event has already started.

Boston Marathon 2011 registration open

However unlike when the Marathon first began participants can register online at the Boston Athletic Association’s website for the event which is due to take place on April 18, 2011 at 9 am sharp on Monday.

The rules for entrance into the race are still the same i.e. all entrants need to meet the Association’s speed and time standards which vary quite a bid depending on the age and the gender of the entrant.

The qualifying standards for the Boston Marathon should have been met after the 20th of September 2009 on a certified Marathon track by the USA Track & Field association or if you are coming from abroad then any foreign equivalent.

Participants need to pay an entrance fee of $130 and since the race is capped at 22,790 it’s imperative that you get registered as soon as possible as the slots do fill up quite quickly. You also need to keep in mind that this figure was reached in just under two months last year and this year the way people are lining up things could go even faster.

Last year’s race as many of you remember was pretty close and this year it could be even more interesting if many of those old racers make a return entrance this year. However the winner of the Men’s event was Rober Kiprono Cheruiyot who crossed the finish line in record time.

Former 400m world champion died of overdose

Former 400 metres world champion Antonio Pettigrew died in August of an antihistamine overdose, a state autopsy report said Wednesday.

The death was ruled a suicide with “diphenhydramine toxicity” as the cause, according to the autopsy and an accompanying investigation report released by the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner’s office.

“A lethal concentration of diphenhydramine was detected in central and peripheral blood specimens,” the autopsy said.

Pettigrew, 42, was an assistant track and field coach at the University of North Carolina and a 2000 Olympian who was stripped of his 4×400 metres relay gold medal after admitting to doping. He also was the 1991 400 metres world champion.

He was found unresponsive by friends in the back seat of his vehicle in rural central North Carolina on August 10.

An empty bottle of a sleep aid was found in the car, the investigation report said.

Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, is often used as a sleep aid and for the treatment of allergies.

In addition to the Olympic gold, Pettigrew helped the United States win three world titles in the 4×400 meters relay.

Olympic Park to be renamed after Queen Elizabeth in 2013

The Olympic Park for the London 2012 Games will be renamed the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2013, the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) revealed on Thursday.

The 500-acre park in east London is going to hold many events such as swimming, athletics, indoor cycling during the 2012 Games as the centrepiece Olympic stadium, aquatic center as well as the velodrome are all inside the park.

Then, the long-term ambition for the park is to create a family- focused environment, seeing up to 11,000 new homes, including the flats now being built within the Olympic Village, developed over the next 25 years.

OPLC believed the name after Queen Elizabeth reflected a real tangible legacy from the 2012 Games, and reflects their plans for making the Park one of Europe’s premier visitor destinations and a new thriving community with family homes, jobs, sports and leisure activities at its heart.

Oz track and field athletes focus the ‘first title’ at Delhi CWG

Australian track and field athlete Sally Pearson reckons that the withdrawal of some of the best racers from the Delhi Commonwealth Games is disappointing, but feels that it is also an opportunity for her to claim her first major title.

Canadians Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Perdita Felicien have pulled out of October 3-14 Games, robbing the 100 metres hurdles’ of its appeal.

“It is quite disappointing that the best aren’t here because it would have been like a world championships final. But you can only beat who is in the race, and that’s all I can do really,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Pearson, as saying.

“I don’t really know why the other athletes have dropped out. It is really late in the season, but it’s a Commonwealth Games, it’s an Australian team, you’re running for your country, and that’s why I am here. And, being a bit selfish, I want my first title,” she added.

Pearson further said that her experience at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games would prove to be vital.

“It was more of an eye-opener of what you have to do to be able to be an elite athlete. It was a really good building block, and I saw how much I wanted to be a world champion and an Olympic champion,” she said. (ANI)
