Holly Bleasdale continued her rapid rise to importance by breaking her own British pole vault record at a meeting in France. The 20-year-old cleared 4.71 metres at the first attempt to improve her previous best by one centimetre. The Chorley-based athlete, who only turned pro in 2010, was delighted with her indoor showing.

I was so happy when I cleared 4.61m but, when I cleared 4.71m, I was ecstatic, she said. It caps a remarkable year for Bleasdale, who won the European Under-23 title in July. She failed to register a height at the World Championships in Daegu, but this latest jump marks her out as a genuine medal contender for the London 2012 Olympics.

The record was even more remarkable, given the fact she was challenging off a 12-stride approach as opposed to her usual 16 strides.I knew I had capabilities of getting 4.61 but getting 4.71 in competition was such a surprise, said Bleasdale, who only entered the contest in Orleans to break up her winter training.

Training has been going amazing and I was really confident and just wanted to have fun seeing as it was just a small competition off a short approach and I did not taper for it.I can’t wait to see what I can vault off 16 strides.Bleasdale’s training partner, Katie Byres, cleared 4.16m to earn fifth place and become the UK indoor junior record-holder.

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya has won the New York City Marathon in a course record time. Mutai finished in an informal time of two hours, five minutes, six seconds, lopping more than two minutes off the old time.

The 30-year-old has traditional himself as the favourite at next summer’s Olympics with this second milestone performance of the year. In April, Mutai ran the fastest marathon in history: 2:03:02 in Boston. That did not count as a world record because the course is measured too straight and too downhill.

The second and third placed runners were also inside the previous New York record of 2:07:43 set by Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia a decade earlier. London Marathon winner, fellow Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai, was one minute, 22 seconds behind. Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia was third.

The women’s race was won by Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado, in a time of two hours, 23 minutes and 15 seconds, to edge her compatriot Buzunesh Deba by four seconds. Dado, 27, making her New York debut, ran an individual best for the distance.

Third place was reigning London Marathon champion, Mary Keitany of Kenya, who led from the start until she was overtaken by the two Ethiopians with just a mile to run. She completed 23 seconds behind. Geoffrey Mutai’s time was still 88 seconds off the men’s marathon world record of 2:03:38, set by Kenya’s Patrick Makau at the Berlin Marathon just 43 days ago.

As with the shot and discus, the hammer throw need a combination of potency and agility training, with good footwork also essential in arrange to preserve proper form. As in golf, where association head speed is the key to space, the speed of the hammer just prior to release will largely decide the length of the throw; provide the competitor uses the correct free point.

Hammer throwers use the same size throwing circle as shot putters, with an inside diameter of 2.135 meters. The hammer is really a three-part device consisting of a metal head expressively concerned to a strengthen wire with a rigid handle that the thrower grips. The women’s hammer weighs four kilograms while the men’s hammer weighs 7.26 kilos. Each challenger usually takes six throws during the hammers event. The longest single throw wins.

Men’s world record:
Yuriy Sedykh and fellow Russian Sergey Litvinov were mostly answerable for taking the hammer-throwing record on a roller coaster ride from 1980 to 1986, when the record distorted hands frequently, even during the same meet.

On May 16, 1980, Sedykh set his first hammer record with a toss measure 80.38 meters. His mark was broken down later in the meet by Juri Tamm (80.46), but domestic that same day by Sedykh (80.64). Litvinov got into the act eight days later with a throw of 81.66. Sedykh retort on July 31 with an 81.80-meter throw.

Litvinov shattered the mark on June 4, 1982 (83.98) then betters it on June 21, 1983 (84.14). Sedykh had the last word in the duel however; obliterate Litvinov’s record with a throw measuring 86.34 on July 3, 1984. Sedykh enhanced the record twice, to 86.66 and, finally, to 86.74 on Aug. 30, 1986.

Women’s world record:
Betty Heidler broke Anita Wlodarczyk’s previous mark with a third-round throw measure 79.42 meters (260 feet, 6 inches) during a meet in Heidler’s native Germany on May 21, 2011.The record, which came on Lysenko’s first throw of the opposition, noticeable the fourth time she’d documented a new standard.

She set her first verification with a throw of 77.06 meters on July 15, 2005. Fellow Russian Gulfiya Khanafeyeva set a new mark of 77.26 on June 12, 2006, but Lysenko take action with a throw of 77.41 just 12 days later. Lysenko betters her record to 77.80 on Aug. 15, 2006.
