Yet another mile stone by ‘Blade Runner’

"A world record is always a good thing to finish the season off on," Pistorius told AFP.

The 23-year-old clocked 47.04 seconds improving his global best by 0.45 seconds.

Pistorius, known as “The Blade Runner” because of the prosthetics he uses for running, set the previous record in Beijing in 2008.

Pistorius set a 46.02 personal best in Italy last month and 46.93 in the B-race in London on Friday night, both against able bodied competition.

But his performance on Saturday easily bettered his previous T44 standard as he continues to stretch the gap between himself and the rest of the world in his class.

“A world record is always a good thing to finish the season off on,” Pistorius told AFP.

“I learned a lot from Friday’s race where the rainy conditions were not what I am used to.”

World Championships 1500m semifinalist Peter van der Westhuizen, 25, fell more than 10 seconds short of his personal best in the men’s mile on Saturday to finish last in 4:05.52.

Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion LJ van Zyl was below his best on Friday when he finished, also last, in 50.64 seconds for his event. This was almost three seconds slower than his career record.

The next Diamond League meeting, the penultimate of 14 this season, will be on August 19 in Zurich.
