SOUTH Africa’s chances of winning more medals at the 2012 London Olympics are slim after a small team was named for the Commonwealth Games in October.
This is according to athletics great Sam Mlangeni, speaking after the SA Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam named the team yesterday.
Sascoc are sending a team of 11 track and field athletes, with no room for the marathoners, including top runners like Hendrick Ramaala. Mlangeni said he could not believe that potential medallists like Rene Kalmer, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula are not in the team.
“I still can’t believe we are sending such a small team to the Commonwealth Games, I thought we were going to send just over 20,” Mlangeni said. “Most of the countries are using the Commonwealth Games to expose their athletes to int
ernational competition and prepare them for the Olympics.”
Sascoc president Gideon
Sam said they were confident that the athletes and swimmers would continue taking the lead in terms of winning medals.
