EUROPEAN silver medallist Chris Thompson and the best distance runner has been named in the England athletics squad for October’s 2010 Commonwealth Games in Dehli.
The 29-year-old Barrow-born distance runner will compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in India after thrusting himself back onto the international scene.
Thompson, a lifelong Barrow AFC fan, finished second behind compatriot Mo Farah in the 10,000m at the European Championships in Barcelona last month.
His medal came after years of injury problems had left him unable to fulfil his potential following victory in the European under-23s 5,000m in 2003.
Thompson and Farah have both been named for the same two events they ran in Spain, with Andrew Vernon the third member of the England team in the 10,000m. The 100-strong England athletics team for the games will also include two other European champions – 110m hurdler Andy Turner and Phillips Idowu, who will be defending his triple jump crown.
Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, who missed the European Championships earlier this summer with a quad injury, was also included in the team for the games, which take place between October 3 and 14.
