Jeomi Maduka’s senior year began with a losing intention. Should I follow my heart, or try to make each person happy, she questioned.

She chose her heart, and that judgment landed her at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., where she practices for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team.

It also destined leaving the Cornell women’s basketball team, a season after being named the Ivy League Player of the Year and leading the Big Red to its first group title.

“I think most people don’t know how difference she was,” said Cornell women’s track and field coach Lou Duesing. “She actually wanted to do both sports. The conflict did just not want to let anybody down.”

So disparate her first three years at Cornell when she was a two-sport star, she payed attention only on track. Many always surprised how good she might be at either if she focused on one sport. The answer didn’t take long.

In February, she was titles for the third-best long jump in the world. Two weeks later, she became the first sportsperson to win four individual events in the 62-year history of the Heptagonal Championships. She did it in a breeze.

Shortly after, she placed second in the country in the long jump at the indoor track and field national championships in her native Texas. Her jump of 21 feet, 4 inches was just 1 1/4 inches shy of the national crown.

Those activities are why Jeomi Maduka has been selected as the 2009 Kenny Van Sickle Female Athlete of the Year.

So perhaps he’s known on the down-low as a guy who will get you what you want.
