Heavy Bag and Fitness Training

Although the heavy bag is one of the oldest, most valuable pieces of training equipment, it has oftentimes been not appreciated due to its commonality. Fitness manufacturers are all the time working hard to bring out new, innovative products into the market to meet today’s growing demand. As new products are developed, unfortunately old training tools such as the heavy bag are often forgotten. Notwithstanding these developments, the heavy bag continues to be the most sport-specific and effective training tool available. To learn and to practice punching with power and speed, there is no alternative to hitting the heavy bag.

A heavy bag workout generally consists of three or four rounds on the bag. Amateur boxers compete with 2-minute rounds while professionals compete with 3-minute rounds. Certain trainers intensify bag sessions by reducing the rest between two rounds to 30-seconds. Some trainers recommend increasing the length of the round. For example, certain professionals hit the bag for 4-minute rounds. The logic is if a fighter can hit the bag for 4-minutes, a standard 3-minute round should become easier. This theory sometimes proves counter-productive. As round length increases, many trainees learn to pace themselves throughout the longer round. Instead of maintaining a continuous intense pace, these fighters conserve energy for the longer round. During competition, these fighters will be unprepared for an opponent who maintains an aggressive, furious pace.

It would be better to increase the intensity through short, yet highly intense punch-out drills. A punch-out drill simply consists of a string of all out punches thrown in rapid succession without rest. During punch drills, the fighter will throw non-stop punches. These drills are absolutely intense and you will essentially be performing high intensity interval training on the heavy bag. This rigorous style of training will prepare you to throw explosive combinations with enormous speed and power. Punch-out drills are commonly referred to as the Olympic Drill because these drills have been used at several Olympic boxing camps. There are hardly any drills that can match the intensity and effectiveness of these brief punch intervals. One important thing to remember is these drills should not replace traditional heavy bag work but practiced alongside.

Another option to traditional heavy bag work is power boxing that involves brief full-speed boxing rounds. Each round should last 60 to 90 seconds with an emphasis on maximum power. The power boxing routine will begin with three traditional rounds of bag work focusing on skill development. Practice multiple combinations, moving left to right, and right to left integrating head movement and combination punching. You should rest not more than one-minute between rounds. Finish with five punch-out drills. Each drill will consist of one non-stop combination, thrown with maximum speed and power. These routines will greatly intensify a heavy bag workout. Avoid restricting yourself to traditional heavy bag training. Remember that you can achieve numerous benefits with short, intense drills on the bag. Draw out a weekly time-table balancing intensity throughout the week. One session can be geared more towards skill development while another can emphasize power and anaerobic endurance. Do not under-estimate the heavy bag as the heavy bag is perhaps the most effective, sport-specific conditioner of all.

Basics of Basketball

Basket ball is one of the most widely played games in the world. Hence it is essential that you are aware of the scoring, the skills which are required for playing the game, the fouls which have to be ignored, violations and the terms and the conditions which have to be followed.

Scoring model: When the field goal is done from the two point goal in such case if a shot is done from anywhere within the play area has to played inside the three point arc. When the field is a three point field goal then it is essential that if there is any shot hit from a place from anywhere outside the three point arc is acceptable. However when the case has to be considered from the free throw then in such a case a point is allocated to an unprotected shot which is taken from backwards the free throw and during such time the clock is stopped.

The skills which are required during the play of the game basketball are as follows:- boxing out: this is the state where the position of the player which is in the middle of the opposing player and the basket wherein the player wants to obtain a position wherein the player gets a better and a rebounding position. Dribbling is another skill which is very essential for any basket ball player, this is a skill wherein the ball is bounced using one hand with their fingertips instead of the palm. The bouncing is done with the fingertips rather than the palms for the reason so that the ball bounces back to the player itself. Let me tell you that this is the best way and the legalized way approved by the gaming association for moving the ball. The actual mode of passing the ball is to move the ball through the method of throwing, or even bouncing, handling, or even rolling it to the other players so that the purpose of passing the ball is served. The process of throwing the ball directly to the basket is referred to as shooting. Pivoting is another method wherein the steps are taken once or more number of times in any of the direction with the same foot while on the other hand the other foot remains in the initial point itself. On the other hand the process of rebounding involves recovering a shot so that the ball bounces off backwards.

Fouls: As far as the fouls in the game of the basketball are considered these fouls offer one or more free throws to the opposition team. Some of the ways through which the fouls can be invited are blocking wherein the progress of the opposition team is restricted by extending or moving the arms in the horizontal direction so that the player gets on the path of the moving player. Charging is another method wherein you can invite the foul is that you would be running with the ball to the stationery player. Hacking is another method wherein the player hits on the arm of the person who is holding the ball.

How Can An Athlete Improve Their Punching Power?

Fighting is one of the most difficult in this world. Whether it is boxing, MMA, K-1, or just a flat out street fighting for pride and defense, there should be good fighting skill. Fighters should be mechanically sound, strong and physical endurance to last through the bout. Having this three characteristic fighter can win the match at the end.

Now let us discuss about some punching techniques a fighter should posses. There are many different ways to throw punch, such as jabs, hooks, crosses and many other methods.

JAB: A jab is a short, quick hand fore fist punch used from guarding position. It is the most commonly used hand attack. It is usually performed with your dominant hand. That is if you are right handed, you jab with your left hand and vice-versa.

HOOK: The hook is a very powerful punch. It is deceptive. It can be thrown by any arms in almost any position. It is practiced within combination of punches. When you execute hook, remember you don't stick your elbows up and out.

UPPERCUT: Uppercut is similar to upset except the target is under chin. This type of punch can be thrown with either hand. It is very useful when in close and may be used to set up a combination or a knockout shot.

OTHER PUNCHES: the most brutal punch that was never explained was roundhouse punches. This is used at close range for finishing blow.

In order to improve the punching power, the best way is to hold dumbbells in each hand and start throwing punches/combination in the air. This will help to increase the speed and punching power. It is recommended that beginners or intermediate boxers can use 3-5 Lbs dumbbells for practice. Also hitting heavy bags can improve your punching power.

To improve the punching power, there should be good routine for good workout, as regular workout helps to maintain the quality of punching power. A good workout I have found for a Monday/Wednesday/Friday split is on the web from another fighter. The routine goes like this-

MONDAY: Pull, DEAD LIFT - SET OF 5 REPS, WEIGHTED PULL-UPS -3 x 6, SLDL'S -3x6, BB ROWS - 4x5, UPRIGHT ROWS - 3x6, AB WHEEL ROLLOUTS - 3x20.

WEDNESDAY: press, BENCH - 3x5, TATE PRESS - 4x5, DB INCLINE PRESS - 3x6, MILITARY PRESS - 3x5, SKULL CRUSHER - 4x8.

FRIDAY: squat, ATG SQUAT - 3x5, BOX SQUATS - 4x6, FRONT SQUATS - 3x8, GOOD MORNINGS - 3x8, SAXON BENDS - 2x12.

As long as athlete participate in other things outside such as lifting, pick ups basketball, swimming, etc. he will not be able to improve his speed. Make your conditioning fun; don't just run laps on the track for hours. That's not a good method anyway.
