Information on Discus

Discus is considered one of the oldest sports in the world. It dates back to 8th century B.C., when this game was not popular. In the beginning i.e. 1928, it was considered a women’s game. At that time, Halima Konopacka of Poland set a world record in Olympic Games. Discus is a popular track and field event wherein contestant throws a weighed disc named discus.

In Olympic Games, contestants throw the disc, who throws it farthest is considered the winner. Discus throwing was part of first Olympic Games which was held on 776 B.C. During those days, Discus was made out of iron and unformed bronze. But as times changed, discus got a new style and shape. Look into these factors before choosing a discus:

  • Always choose a disc based on your sex and age of a person. If you notice, women always throw a 1k discus. But men have more choices. Men who are 14 years and below will throw a 1k discus; 15-18 year old throw a 1.6k discus and men in college aged throw a 2k discus.
  • Choose the right material. Discus is made up of different materials like rubber, wood and plastic. Rubber discus is usually reserved for beginners. Wooden discus is meant for next level and composite discus for the most advanced level.
  • If a discus player throws a heavier rim, he is considered an experienced player. More advanced the thrower, the more overall weight that should be transferred to rim.

How to clean discus

  • Always rinse metal discus in hot water. Pay close attention to rim and outer parts.
  • Clean discus with dish washing detergent
  • Scrub the rough areas with brillo pad, until grime is removed.
  • Rinse metal discus
  • Dry metal discus with a soft cloth
